That’s right, I did. But, it’s surely not over spilled milk or the stain on my new poplin shirt.
Geocities, yes that beloved relic of ages ago, has finally closed it’s doors…
It’s actually hard to believe that the site was still up and running until a few days ago; but alas, it is no more.
I’ve got very fond memories of sitting in my parent’s house at age 12 thinking I was going to take over the world from my ” little corner of the internets.” Yes, you read that right, I said “internets.”
I can’t help think this is part of Carol Bartz’s plan to cut Yahoo’s fat and focus on core, money making, properties.
Lets be honest, GeoCities was a poorly monetized hosting space with loads of bandwidth that could very quickly be swapped out to other areas that could use the space & the speed.
Yahoo has loads of properties that may meet the same fate, but I’m not one to say. To name a few - HotJobs, Real Estate & Auctions (still up and running over seas).
Either way, I’m confident closing down non-core business functions will help make the purple Y! a little brighter
