Your Best Keywords…

Might just be the ones you’d never use yourself.

Yahoo Search Marketing recently posted a great article about researching keywords for Pay Per Click. I appreciate the fact that they start the article by mentioning something a lot of advertisers forget - think like a customer. It sounds obvious, right? You’d be surprised at how often this gets overlooked.

As a store owner, you are the expert in your field. You know the correct terminology for everything you sell. However, you can’t assume the general public knows exactly what each and every product name is. It’s to your benefit to look at some of the search engines’ keyword tools to see what they keywords they suggest.  I know, I know, it might not be right, but you’re not going to change the way people are talking about your product (at least not overnight). What you can change is your attitude towards your advertising. :-) There are still consumers out there ready to buy, regardless of what they call your product. And once you get them in the door, it’s a perfect opportunity to educate them about your store!
