Holiday Sale

Well, just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and AIG bite the dust. And unfortunatly the government doesn’t just happpen to have $85 billion dollars in the freezer for a rainy day, which exacerbates the situation slightly. All of this is happening at a time when growth of the economy has shrunken to recession levels and the government keeps accumulating debt faster than a teenager with his parent’s credit card. So what does all of this mean for you? A 45% discount on your entire store for the holiday season. How is that possible, you ask? Geotargeting!

If you have a product that is popular in Europe, the UK, Canada, etc. you are already offering huge discounts on all of your products even though you might not know it. The U.S. dollar is in a somewhat pathetic state, which is good news for people living in countries with strong currency values because they save big on products that are priced in dollars.

Let’s say, for example, that you own a store that sells iPods which are of course popular over the world and retail for similar prices regardless of the geographic location of the seller. So, an iPod might retail in the U.S. for $150 and that same iPod would retail in London for 150 British Pounds. So, if you’re a savvy young Londoner, you might decide to buy your iPod from an American online retailer. The same iPod you could buy downtown for 150 pounds you could buy online for 81.59 pounds. That’s a savings of about 45%. Even if you have to pay $10 for shipping (5.44 pounds) you’re still getting a sweet deal on your new iPod.

Check out where traffic to your site is coming from. If you have a lot of visitors from the UK, for example, it might be a good idea to create a geotargeted campaign to run in the UK. Because offering your products at 45% less than the competition without having to actaully discount your prices is ace.
